Fences & Gates
Fences, Gates & Privacy Screens
Post setting and line control decide whether a fence still looks straight after two seasons. That is where the time goes, and it is the difference between a fence line and a row of leaning posts.
Overview
What the Work Involves
A fence, gate or privacy screen project with ZaRRuS covers full fence lines, custom gates and hardware, privacy screens, decorative panels, post setting and framing, and staining and finishing. The work is planned and installed as one job across Toronto and the GTA.
From full fence lines and gates to privacy screens, posts, panels, and decorative backyard enclosure details, the focus is clean lines, durability and accurate alignment.
Post setting and line control decide whether a fence still looks straight after two seasons — so that is where the time goes.
Who this service is for
Homeowners defining a property line, adding privacy, or replacing fencing that has shifted.
What shapes the scope and budget
- Length and height. Fence height is limited by the local by-law and differs between front, side and rear yards.
- Material. Pressure-treated, cedar, composite or aluminium.
- Posts. Concrete-set posts and their depth and spacing; rocky soil, roots or old concrete slow the work.
- Gates. The number, width and hardware of gates.
- Removal. Taking down and disposing of an existing fence.
- Grade changes. Sloped yards need stepped or racked sections.
Every estimate is written line by line after a site visit. Where a number depends on a decision you have not made yet, it is shown as a range with the variable named.
How the work runs
- Site visit. Fence line, grade and gate positions reviewed, and utility locates arranged.
- Design and by-law check. Height, style and material confirmed against the local by-law.
- Removal. The old fence is taken down and hauled away.
- Posts. Posts set, plumbed and aligned on a string line.
- Panels and gates. Rails, boards and gates installed and hardware adjusted.
- Finishing and walkthrough. Stain or sealer where specified, cleanup and review with you.

Questions
Fences, Gates & Privacy Screens Questions
How long does it take to install a fence?
Several days to two weeks depending on run length, grade changes and gate hardware. Post setting is the part that decides whether it still looks straight in two years.
What’s included in a fence installation?
Post setting, framing, panels, gates and hardware, plus staining or finishing where wanted. Locate calls before digging are arranged as standard.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
Fences are governed by local by-laws covering height and placement rather than building permits in most cases. Corner lots and pool enclosures have stricter rules.
Who decides where the property line is?
The property owner. A survey is the reliable reference. On a shared boundary, agreeing with the neighbour before installation avoids disputes later.
How high can my fence be?
It depends on the municipality and where the fence sits on the lot. Rear and side-yard fences are usually allowed to be higher than front-yard fences. The local by-law is checked before the fence is designed.
