What shapes the scope and budget
- Fireplace type. Electric units need a dedicated circuit; gas units need a gas line, venting and a licensed gas fitter.
- Surround material. Large-format porcelain, natural stone, tile or wood panelling differ in material and labour.
- Framing. Building the wall out to house the unit, venting and cables adds framing and drywall.
- Storage and shelving. Built-in cabinets or open shelving on either side add millwork.
- TV and media. In-wall power, cable conduit and mounting blocking are planned before the wall is closed.
- Lighting. Shelf lighting and wall washes need wiring in place before drywall.

How the work runs
- Site visit. Wall structure, venting route or power, room centre and seating position.
- Design. Proportions and elevations; the fireplace model is chosen early because its specifications set the framing.
- Framing and rough-in. The bump-out is framed and blocked; electrical, gas and venting are roughed in by licensed trades.
- Board, surround and millwork. Drywall, tile or stone, panelling and cabinetry installed.
- Lighting and mounting. Lights connected, TV mounted and cables concealed.
- Walkthrough. The finished wall is reviewed with you before completion.

How long does a feature wall take to build?
One to three weeks depending on whether a fireplace unit, stone or integrated lighting is involved. Electrical and gas coordination, where needed, is scheduled before finishing starts.
What’s included in a fireplace wall installation?
Framing, surround, finish material, integrated shelving and concealed cable routing. Supply and certification of a gas or electric fireplace unit is coordinated but installed to manufacturer and code requirements.
Do I need a permit for a fireplace or feature wall?
Finish work does not require a permit. Gas appliance installation must be done by a licensed technician, and structural changes to the wall may require one.
Can a TV go above a fireplace?
It can, if the fireplace’s heat clearances allow it and the viewing height is comfortable. The manufacturer’s specifications decide the clearances, so the unit is chosen before the wall is designed.
Should I choose an electric or a gas fireplace?
Electric is simpler: no venting or gas line, and it can go almost anywhere. Gas gives real heat and flame but needs a gas line, venting and a licensed gas fitter. Both options are weighed at the planning stage.
